UPDATE 8/9/17: JUST ADDED MORE ROOMS

UPDATE 25/8/17: IMPORTANT THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES TO THIS EVENT DUE TO EUROSTAR WITHDRAWING THE DIRECT MARSEILLES SERVICE IN APRIL – ALL THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY BOOKED THE TRIP HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE NEW SCHEDULE. BELOW IS AMMENDED INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH THE NEW TRANSPORT INFORMATION:

Precis: We’re taking advantage of the Eurostar and high speed French TGV rail services to cross Europe to the cosmopolitan splendour of The French Riviera without having to board a plane! It’s one of Europe’s great train journeys. A very civilized and enjoyable way to travel and a wonderful way to see France from top to tail in just a few hours! We are staying in the glamourous resort of Cannes, where we can promenade amongst the rich, famous and stylish and enjoy the spectacular seafront. We have also included a day trip to Monaco/ Monte Carlo, favoured retreat of the super-rich and a half day excursion to the idyllic hill top town of Margins.

Cannes: As you walk among the couture shops and palaces of La Croisette*, the wealth and glamour of it all cannot fail to impress: admiring Ferraris and Porsches cruising by and celebrity spotting on the glitzy sunlounger-striped beaches and liner-sized yachts moored at the port are hot Cannes pastimes. Whether Cannes' soul has managed to survive its celebrity-playground status is another question, but, there’s still enough natural beauty to make a trip worthwhile: the harbour, the bay, the clutch of islands off the coast and the old quarter, Le Suquet, all spring into life on a sunny day.

*The Promenade de la Croisette is a 2km road along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The Croisette is known for the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival is held and for its luxury shopping (Prada, Gucci, Hermes, Longchamps, Burma, Chanel, Bulgari, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston), and restaurants, and finest hotels. It is a popular place to walk in the evening air.

Monaco/ Monte Carlo: Squeezed into just 200 hectares, the Principality of Monaco might be the world’s second-smallest country (the Vatican is smaller), but what it lacks in size it makes up for in attitude. We will be concentrating on the Monte Carlo area, a magnet for high-rollers and hedonists since the early 20th century, it's also one of the world's most notorious tax havens (residents pay no income tax). It's also famous for its annual Formula 1 Grand Prix, it’s casino and Royal Palace. It’s a place to people-watch, car-watch, yacht-watch, helicopter-watch and enjoy the glamour of a place that is utterly unique!

Mougins: This hilltop village looks almost too perfect to be real. Picasso discovered the medieval village in 1935 and lived here from 1961 for the last 12 years of his life. Mougins has been frequented and inhabited by many other artists and celebrities, including Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Arman, Yves Klein, César Baldaccini, Paul Éluard, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Winston Churchill, Catherine Deneuve, Édith Piaf and Jacques Brel, to name but a few. Picasso's studio was in the old village in a building that is now the tourist office. In recent years, Mougins has become something of an elite location, with prestigious hotel-restaurants, the country’s most sought-after international school and Sophia Antipolis (France’s Silicon Valley) nearby.

Our Hotel: Around 7 minutes walk from the beach, Hotel Montaigne & Spa is located in the centre of Cannes, just a 5 minute walk from La Croisette. Guests have free access to the Spa, which offers Turkish bath, indoor swimming pool, hot tub and beauty treatments. The contemporary guest rooms include air conditioning, a flat-screen HD TV and Wi-Fi.

There’s a lovely decked terrace where we can meet in the evening to enjoy an aperitif.

Eating & Drinking: A buffet breakfast is included to start the day, but other meals are not. We can find café’s/ bars for lunches as we explore and there is no shortage of places to eat out in the evening. It is usual for us to split into smaller groups for eating out in the evening and then to meet up in the many bars.

Exploring Together: It is very much up to you how you wish to spend the time between our excursions. However, the coordinator will always ensure there is a “group option” for those who wish to stay together. You can opt in and out of this as you wish, but there should never be any need to be alone unless you wish to be. The coordinator is not a “tour guide” but will have some ideas of places to see and possible places to dine to suit all budgets.
