Following the success of last year’s first Choir Camp with Peter Straker, this exciting gathering returns to Ingestre Hall but this time the special guest is Kiki Dee.

This is an unusual event which has been put together by Vocal Coach and conductor Matthew Jones and is offered as a Spice National Event as well as being shared with members of some other groups that Matthew works with. No singing skill or experience is expected, just a keenness to sing with others of all vocal abilities and have fun making new friends in a relaxed, music filled environment.

Commencing on the Friday evening, a buffet will be served as we mingle and settle in before singing pop, gospel, musical theatre and classical (Matthew is busy writing six-part arrangements especially for the occasion!) After some parlour games and a nightcap or two, it’ll be ‘lights out’ before waking up to a full English breakfast to set us up for a busy Saturday of music-making.

Set in some thirty acres of Staffordshire countryside, we’ll have the exclusive run of the Jacobean mansion. There’ll be time during the day to explore its grounds including a private tour of St Mary the Virgin, the only Christopher Wren church outside London. In the evening, we’ll don our glad rags and, after a champagne reception, dance the night away as Matthew hosts one of his legendary black-tie parties! And for those who dare, ghost stories will be read into the early hours…

The weekend will culminate in a very special session on the Sunday morning with none other than the iconic Kiki Dee. Best known for her 1976 international number one duet with Elton John, ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’, Dee was the first white British artist to be signed by Motown. After solo success with ‘Amoureuse’ and ‘I’ve Got the Music in Me’, she went on to play the starring role of Mrs Johnstone in Bill Kenwright’s original production of Blood Brothers. An audience of local villagers will hear the fruits of our labour and we’ll enjoy a Sunday roast before saying our goodbyes, until next time.

Accommodation: There are a variety of multi bedded rooms and we will endeavour  to keep Spice members together where possible.

Non Residential option: The non-residential option includes everything but food & accommodation. All are welcome to attend the parlour games, church tour, Saturday night party & ghost stories.

In Matthew’s words: “As far as I’m concerned, there is no activity more inclusive than group singing so whether you’re a complete beginner or seasoned professional, I invite you to join me in what promises to be an unforgettable experience”.

For those travelling from London, Ingestre Hall is easily accessible by train to Rugeley Trent Valley, direct from London Euston.

Feedback from Last Year’s Choir Camp with Peter Straker:

● "It was an absolutely brilliant weekend. Musical director, phenomenal. All his support staff, very efficient and organised. Everyone went out of their way to make it a good weekend. Thanks to Matthew for a wonderful weekend. I did learn a great deal."

● "I had a really great weekend from the mansion house setting to the people I met. A great mix of vocal coaching and social event. Matthew is very passionate about what he does and gets results by being so focused. It was very full on and we achieved a lot. It was a real experience staying in a dormitory environment just like being at boarding school!"

● "I realised I expected to sing but didn't expect to learn and I did both! I found the pace just about right - comfortable enough for me as a beginner but also stretching and for me at least, Matthew's promise that we'd all be better singers by the end of the weekend, came true. The weekend was wonderful, relaxing and fun, and the first time I've felt truly happy for quite a few months since a family bereavement - singing is wonderful medicine! I've been inspired to make enquiries about local choirs and I'm hoping to take a few singing lessons too. Matthew himself is great fun and I enjoyed his unique combination of humour and high expectations!"

● "It was a super weekend, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Ingestre Hall was glorious & the atmosphere was good. I found the choir sessions uplifting & I think Matthew managed the mixed ability group with great skill."

● "I had a fantastic time. Really enjoyed the singing. Matthew's got really good/perfect hearing. You can't hide. The songs were amazing. I also really enjoyed the tour of Christopher Wren's church."
