Since 2011 we have had a thriving Book Club in Sutton, so it seemed about time for us to offer a similar event to members in the south of our area. This has been made possible by the very kind offer of our member Alex Ajao to run these evenings as a volunteer. This is an experiment to see if there is interest, however, if the first date proves popular we intend to run the event every month (except August) throughout the year.

The Venue: Spice have rented this lovely café for 2 hours. There will be an opportunity to buy drinks from 7pm to 7.15pm after which the staff will leave us alone for the night. The venue is not licensed but you are allowed to bring your own alcoholic drinks to consume there.

The Format: is that each month we discuss a set book that we have read in preparation. The conversation will be led by our volunteer, Alex Ajao, but is very informal.

A voluntary collection is taken each month which we will send to Book Aid International who send books to schools and libraries in third world countries and are endorsed by celebrity writers such as Michael Palin and their patron is The Duke of Edinburgh. It costs just £2 to send one book to readers in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond so every penny we raise can make a difference. (Our modest collections each month really add up and so far have resulted in enough money being raised for Bookaid International for over 1000 books to have been sent in our name to schools and libraries in Sub Saharan Africa).

Preparation: You will need to have read each book beforehand (hence the advance notice). We often are able to choose books that are on offer at WH Smith and or try your local library.

Location: The Happy Heart Café is at 26 Richmond Rd, Olton, Solihull B92 7RP. It’s a residential area with parking on the streets surrounding the café.

The Books: (the month given is the month of the evening when we will be meeting to discuss the book). Some months we will be using the same book as the Spice Book Club in Sutton Coldfield, but on some months we will choose a different title, so please check the list.

November 2017:

The Keeper of Lost Things  - Ruth Hogan

A Richard & Judy Book Club Pick 2017 – “One of the most charming novels either of us has read. Don't lose it. Keep it” Richard & Judy

Once a celebrated author of short stories now in his twilight years, Anthony Peardew has spent half his life collecting lost objects, trying to atone for a promise broken many years before.

Realising he is running out of time, he leaves his house and all its lost treasures to his assistant Laura, the one person he can trust to fulfil his legacy and reunite the thousands of objects with their rightful owners.

But the final wishes of the 'Keeper of Lost Things' have unforeseen repercussions which trigger a most serendipitous series of encounters...

January 2018

Arthur: the dog that crossed the jungle to find a home  - by Mikael Landlord, Val Hudson

We’ve chosen  a heart warming book for January that was recommended by a book club attender...

The heart-warming true story of an incredible rescue dog. When you are racing 435 miles through the jungles and mountains of South America, the last thing you need is a stray dog tagging along. But that's exactly what happened to Mikael Lindnord, captain of a Swedish adventure racing team, when he threw a scruffy mongrel a meatball one afternoon ..

February 2018

All the Light we Cannot See  -  by Anthony Doerr

A ‘tear jerker’ for February

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

● “I really enjoyed the book club, the venue is really friendly and the cafe sells a variety of snacks that caters for gluten free, vegetarian and we were welcome to bring our own drinks if we wanted to, including alcohol!

The group decided on the next book, and I'm looking forward to the next one”

● “I really enjoyed this month's bookclub. A brilliant choice of book - I really enjoyed reading it. The host was lovely and welcoming and it was great fun discussing the book. The venue was a lovely little coffee shop - a great place to meet up”

● “Really enjoyed attending the Spice Solihull Book Club on 9th October in Olton. The book chosen for that evening, ‘Sarah’s Key’ was a tremendous selection and certainly gave us plenty to discuss, which was well chaired by Alex who brought questions to start the discussion. The venue the ‘Happy Heart Cafe’ is lovely and relaxed and there was a choice of hot drinks and cakes/biscuits on offer to buy at the start of the evening. Looking forward to the next night, with good company and another interesting book choice in ‘The keeper of lost things’ to discuss, which I am enjoying reading at present”
